Where Have You Been? What to Do When You Feel Like God Isn't Showing Up

There are moments in life when everything falls apart and the first question we ask is, "God, where have you been?" But what if that's the wrong question? What if the real question is being asked in the other direction?

When It Feels Like God Didn't Show Up

In John 11, Martha's brother Lazarus had died. She had watched him get sick, and Jesus didn't come in time. When He finally arrived, her words cut straight to the heart of something many of us have felt: "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother would not have died." (John 11:21)

That feeling is real. You prayed all night. You fasted. You did everything you were supposed to do. And still, things didn't work out the way you expected. It can feel like God was absent.

But here's what God wants us to understand: the question is not where He has been. The question is where we have been.

God Has Been Here the Whole Time

Scripture is clear on this. "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." - Psalm 46:1

He is always present. But are we present when He is presenting the answer? Are we listening when He is whispering the instructions? Are we tuned in, or have we been too distracted to hear Him?

The same chapter reminds us: "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." - Psalm 46:10

Sometimes the reason we feel like God hasn't shown up is simply because we have been too busy to slow down and recognize that He already did.

Have You Penciled God Out of Your Schedule?

Life gets full. Work, responsibilities, and distractions pile up. And slowly, without even realizing it, we can push God to the margins of our day.

If you are finding it hard to pray, you have penciled God out. If you are finding it hard to read your Bible, you have penciled God out. Jesus should always be the priority, not an afterthought.

"In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly." - Psalm 5:3

There will never be a "where have you been" moment when you are always expecting God to show up. Expectation changes everything.

Are You Praying With Faith or Just Going Through the Motions?

One of the most honest moments in all of Scripture comes from a desperate Father whose son was possessed by a demon. Jesus told him: "If you can believe, all things are possible to Him who believes." - Mark 9:23

And the Father's response? "Lord, I believe; help my unbelief." (Mark 9:24)

That is one of the most transparent prayers in the Bible. He believed, but he needed help believing more. Many of us are in that same place. We pray, but in the back of our minds, we are not really expecting an answer. We have been let down too many times by people, and we project that disappointment onto God.

But God is not like the people who failed you. He is a heavenly Father who always shows up.

Daniel 10:12 puts it plainly: "Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them."

The day you pray with humility and faith, heaven hears you. The answer is already in motion.

Don't Let the No's Cancel Your Future Yes

Sometimes God allows hard things because they are the only thing that will move us. Jesus said something striking in John 11:15: "For your sake, I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe."

He let Lazarus die on purpose. Not out of cruelty, but because the miracle that was coming required the right moment and the right audience.

There are seasons of no's. Doors that close. Prayers that seem unanswered. But a no season does not mean there is no yes coming. Do not let the no's cancel your future yes. God is working in the background even when you cannot see it.

Why God Sometimes Makes You Wait

Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days by the time Jesus arrived. That detail is not accidental. In those four days, word spread. People traveled. A crowd gathered. And when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, the maximum number of people were there to witness it.

Sometimes God makes you wait because more people need to see the miracle. Your testimony is not just for you. It is for everyone watching your life. The longer the wait, the greater the witness.

When Jesus stood at the tomb, He prayed: "Father, I thank you that you have heard me... I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me." (John 11:41-42)

They thought they were going to a funeral. God turned it into a revival.

The Antidote for Depression and Discouragement

The "where have you been" feeling often comes wrapped in depression and sadness. But there is an antidote.

"You will show me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore." - Psalm 16:11

It is impossible to remain in depression when you are in the presence of God. Notice what happens when you walk into a place of worship. That heaviness lifts. The problem is that many people leave the presence behind when they walk out the door.

The answer is to take the presence with you. Turn on worship music. Praise God in your home, in your car, throughout your week. His presence cancels depression, anxiety, and fear. Do not wait until Sunday to experience what is available to you every single day.

Obedience Is Where the Miracle Lives

When Jesus decided to go back to Jerusalem, Thomas said, "Let us also go, that we may die with Him." (John 11:16) It was a dangerous place. But Jesus went anyway because the miracle was there.

Some people have missed miracles because they were not willing to go where God told them to go. The miracle was in the discomfort. The breakthrough was in the obedience.

"To obey is better than sacrifice." - 1 Samuel 15:22

Be obedient even when it does not make sense. Even when the path looks uncomfortable or unfamiliar. That is exactly where God tends to show up.

Your Delay Is by Design

Whatever you are waiting on right now, understand this: your delay is by design. It is not punishment. It is not abandonment. God is working something out that is bigger than what you can currently see.

He knows things you do not know. He sees the full picture. And the drastic things He allows are not meant for your demise. They are meant to bring Him glory and to bring you closer to Him.

The question is not where God has been. He has been here the whole time. The question is whether you will meet the moment with faith, with praise, and with obedience.

Life Application

This week, instead of asking God where He has been, turn the question around. Ask Him where you have been. Have you been present? Have you been listening? Have you been obedient to what He already told you to do?

Your challenge this week is to intentionally bring God's presence into your daily life. That might mean starting your morning in prayer before anything else. It might mean turning on worship music when discouragement creeps in. It might mean taking a step of obedience you have been putting off.

Do not wait until Sunday to experience what God has made available to you every day.

Questions to Ask Yourself

• Have I been so busy that I have missed the answers God was already giving me?
• Am I praying with genuine expectation, or am I going through the motions without real faith?
• Is there a step of obedience I have been avoiding because it feels uncomfortable or uncertain?
• Am I carrying God's presence with me throughout the week, or only seeking it on Sundays?
• What hard season in my life might God be using to grow my faith or to be a witness to others?
