Turn In Your Paperwork: How to Stop Planning Without God and Start Trusting His Direction

Most of us have no problem sharing our dreams with friends, mapping out five-year plans, or building vision boards. But when it comes to actually bringing those plans to God first, something holds us back. This is a message about what it means to truly surrender your plans to God, and why doing so is the most freeing thing you will ever do.

Why Do We Share Our Dreams With Everyone Except God?

It is easy to spend hours talking to others about the vision God has placed in your heart. But spending even a few minutes in prayer asking God to confirm that vision? That feels harder.

There is a quiet assumption many of us carry: that if we work hard enough, God will simply bless whatever we have already decided to do. We act as though our own judgment is sharper than His, or that what God wants for us could not possibly be as good as what we want for ourselves.

But Proverbs 16:9 says it plainly: "A man's heart plans his way, but the Lord directs His steps."

You can make the plan. God directs the steps. Those are two very different things.

What Happens When You Say Yes Before You Pray?

Many people accept a job offer, commit to a relationship, or make a major life decision and then pray about it afterward. The problem is not the decision itself. The problem is the order.

When we move first and pray later, we are essentially telling God: "I will let You know what I decided. Please bless it."

God's response is not to punish us, but He also will not pretend that our agenda is His agenda. If something is not in His will, no amount of effort will make it work the way we hoped. We end up going in circles, job to job, situation to situation, wondering why nothing is sticking.

Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us: "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future."

God already has a plan. The question is whether we are willing to ask what it is before we move.

How Our Own Plans Can Erase Our Future

Every time we step outside of God's plan, we chip away at the future He has prepared for us. Think of it like a photograph slowly fading. The more we insist on doing things our own way, the more that bright future gets erased, little by little.

God sees the entire film. We only see a screenshot.

That is why He says in Isaiah 55: "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts."

He is not holding out on you. He is holding something better for you, but it requires you to stop revising His master plan with your own rough draft.

The Real Reason We Avoid Praying About Big Decisions

Here is the honest truth: we avoid turning our plans over to God because we are not willing to surrender.

To surrender means releasing control of both the outcome and the process. For people who are driven, ambitious, or used to being in charge, that feels like losing. But it is actually the opposite.

If you are not where you want to be in life, it is a clear sign you have not fully surrendered. You are still holding the wheel, and that is why you keep drifting off course.

Psalms 32:8 says: "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go. I will guide you with my eye."

God is not asking you to stop having goals. He is asking you to stop treating Him like a co-signer on your plans instead of the Author of them.

What the Children of Israel Teach Us About Wasted Time

The journey from Egypt to the Promised Land should have taken eleven days on foot. Instead, the Israelites wandered for forty years.

Forty years for an eleven-day trip. That is what disobedience and a refusal to trust God's direction can cost you.

They saw giants in the land and let those giants become stumbling blocks. They murmured and complained instead of trusting. And so they walked in circles when the destination was right in front of them.

Many of us are doing the same thing. We are walking around in seasons that should have ended long ago, not because God is withholding, but because we keep choosing our own route.

God says: "I can take years off your journey if you just turn in your paperwork."

Even Jesus Had to Surrender His Will

In the Garden of Gethsemane, with drops of blood falling from His brow, Jesus prayed: "Father, if you are willing, take this cup away. But yet not my will, but yours." (Luke 22:42)

Jesus, fully God and fully man, did not want to go through what was ahead. He asked for another way. But He surrendered anyway. And because He did, the entire world was changed.

That is the model. You can tell God it is hard. You can ask Him to take the difficulty away. But then you go anyway, because you trust that He knows what He is doing.

Sometimes you will move forward with tears in your eyes, not knowing how it will work out, but trusting the One who does.

What It Means to Be in Alignment With God

Proverbs 16:3 says: "Commit your works to the Lord and your thoughts will be established."

Alignment means you are not asking God to bless your agenda. You are asking God to set the agenda. There is a big difference between those two prayers.

Many people build their own kingdom and then ask God to bless it. But God says that was never His kingdom to begin with. That is why it is not working. That is why the blessing feels just out of reach.

When you are in lock step with God, there is no gap for the enemy to slip through. When your ways please the Lord, even your enemies are brought to peace with you. (Proverbs 16:7)

There Is Real Freedom in Letting Go

Surrendering to God is not passive. It is one of the most active, courageous things a person can do.

When you finally say, "God, this is not on me, this is on You," something shifts. The anxiety lifts. The fear loses its grip. You can breathe again.

Ephesians 2:10 says: "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them."

You were created for His purpose, not your own. When you stop fighting that truth and start walking in it, everything changes. Not always in the way you expected, but always in a way that is better than what you could have arranged on your own.

Proverbs 16:8 puts it this way: "Better is a little with righteousness than vast revenues without justice."

Peace with God is worth more than any promotion, paycheck, or position you could chase on your own.

How to Actually Turn In Your Paperwork

• Pray before you decide, not after. Before you say yes to anything significant, bring it to God first.
• Ask for His will, not just His blessing. The prayer is not "God, bless what I chose." It is "God, show me what to choose."
• Trust Him through the hard parts. Job 23:10 says: "But He knows the way that I take. And when He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold."
• Stay in alignment. Seek His wisdom daily, not just in crisis moments.
• Release the outcome. You do the praying. Let God do the directing.

Life Application

This week, before you make any decision, whether big or small, pause and bring it to God first. Not after you have already committed. Not as a formality. Actually stop, pray, and ask: "God, is this Your will for me? Is this where You want me to go?"

If there is something you have already committed to without praying about it, bring it to God now. It is not too late to surrender it and ask Him to redirect your steps if needed.

Ask yourself these questions as you go through your week:

• Am I asking God to bless my agenda, or am I asking God to set my agenda?
• Is there an area of my life where I am still holding the wheel instead of letting God direct my steps?
• What would it look like for me to fully surrender this situation to God this week, and what is stopping me from doing that right now?

God's plans for you are better than your plans for yourself. You were created by Him and for Him. Turn in your paperwork, and let Him work it out.
