Who Are You Running To? Finding Rest in Jesus When Life Gets Heavy

Life gets hard. Everyone, at some point, hits a wall of weariness, stress, or fear. The real question is not whether you will face those moments. The question is: who are you running to when they come?

What Does the Bible Say About Weariness and Rest?

In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus gives one of the most comforting invitations in all of Scripture:

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." - Matthew 11:28-30

These verses speak to everyone. If you have ever been tired, overwhelmed, depressed, or just worn down by life, this passage is for you. The common denominator in fighting weariness is simple: come to Jesus.

Why Do We Run to the Wrong Things?

The enemy knows that who you run to makes all the difference. So his strategy is not to make you forget that help exists. His strategy is to send you in the wrong direction.

As Jesus said in John 10:10: "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." - John 10:10

When you should be running to Jesus, the enemy points you toward temporary relief. Secular music that deepens the pain. Relationships that create soul ties. Substances that feel like an escape but only open the door to more bondage. These things feel like answers in the moment, but they are fool's gold.

Do You Want One Hour of Relief or the Life God Is Building?

This is the question worth sitting with. God is building something in you. He is the master builder. But one hour of chasing a vice can tear down what He has been constructing over months or years.

The trust you are building with God, the integrity you are walking in, the holiness you are pursuing. None of it is worth trading for a moment of temporary comfort. That one hour of relief is not worth a lifetime of what God has planned.

Why You Cannot Afford to Self-Diagnose

Too many people try to solve their own problems without ever taking them to Jesus. They talk to friends, scroll social media, or look for answers in all the wrong places. But God is the doctor of doctors.

When you feel off, the first question to ask yourself is: did I take this to Jesus, or am I doing a self-diagnosis? No app, no guru, no amount of self-help content can do what the Holy Spirit can do from the inside out.

What Is the Holy Spirit's Role in Your Daily Life?

Jesus told His disciples not to go anywhere until they received power. In Luke 24:49, He said: "I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." - Luke 24:49

That power is the Holy Spirit. And in John 16:13, Jesus promised: "But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come." - John 16:13

You cannot run to something you do not have. If you do not have the Holy Spirit living inside you, you are trying to fight life's battles without the right equipment.

Why Do People Avoid Sound Doctrine?

Second Timothy 4:3-4 gives a clear warning: "For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths." - 2 Timothy 4:3-4

People avoid sound doctrine because it requires something from them. It requires holiness. It requires saying no to the flesh. It is easier to find someone who will tell you what you want to hear. But smooth words will lead you away from truth, while sound doctrine will lead you to where you actually need to be.

Run away from any answer that does not include Jesus. As 2 Timothy 3:5 warns: "Having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people." - 2 Timothy 3:5

What Does It Mean to Walk in Holiness?

Hebrews 12:14 is direct: "Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord." - Hebrews 12:14

Holiness is not optional. It is the path to seeing God. And the Holy Spirit is what makes it possible. You cannot walk in holiness on your own strength, which is exactly why Jesus told His disciples to wait for the power before they did anything else.

When God changes you, the old version of you should not still be showing up. As 2 Corinthians 5:17 says: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" - 2 Corinthians 5:17

What Does the Yoke of Jesus Actually Mean?

The word "yoke" in Matthew 11 comes from the Greek word meaning a heavy wooden frame placed on the necks of working animals so they can share the weight of a heavy task together. The key word is together.

Jesus is not asking you to carry your burdens alone. He is saying: put it on me. Your children, your job, your finances, your fears, your anxiety. He is carrying it. You do not have to hold all of that weight by yourself.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. As Lamentations 3:22-23 reminds us: "Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." - Lamentations 3:22-23

Are You Too Smart to Trust God?

In Matthew 11:25, Jesus prays: "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children." - Matthew 11:25

Some people are too smart for their own good. They think they have it figured out. They do not need the church, the Holy Ghost, or the Bible. But God reveals Himself to those who come to Him with humility, like a child who knows they need help and is not ashamed to ask for it.

Life Application

This week, pay attention to where you run when life gets hard. The next time you feel overwhelmed, anxious, lonely, or tempted to reach for a vice, stop and run to Jesus first. Not after you have already tried everything else. First.

That might look like a prayer in your car before you walk into a hard situation. It might mean opening your Bible instead of opening social media. It might mean bringing something to the altar that you have been carrying on your own for too long.

God is building something in you. Do not let one hour of temporary relief tear it down.

Ask yourself these questions this week:

  • When I feel stressed, overwhelmed, or tempted, what is the first thing I reach for?
  • Is there a "candy bar" in my life that I keep returning to instead of running to Jesus?
  • Am I carrying a burden right now that I have never actually handed over to God?
  • Do I have the Holy Spirit living inside me, and am I actually relying on His power daily?
  • Am I seeking sound doctrine, or am I surrounding myself with voices that only tell me what I want to hear?

Jesus said it plainly: come to Him. Not someday. Now. He is gentle, He is humble, and He is ready to give you the rest your soul has been looking for.
